Highlights
Teaching For Learning Grants 2009-2010
Welcome back to all our teachers, administration and staff. Congratulations to the 2009 Teaching For Learning Grant recipients, Jodie King and Sharla Lewis. Together we make a difference in our students, schools and community. Education is a precious gift, it is never enough just to learn facts or to master Skills. A child needs to develop a love of learning and a respect for knowledge from the earliest years. Teachers remember to apply for the Teaching For Learning Grants in January 2010.
"One of the ways we encourage literacy in preschool is to give books to children so that their parents can read to them at home. Up to this point, when we have had a student who speaks Hmong, we have sent books home in English. That makes it hard for some parents and most grandparents to read to their children. This grant will provide money to buy books in Hmong. That means parents and grandparents whose first language is Hmong will be able to read to their children at home and provide more time working on the early reading skills that all children need."
— Jodie King, Early Childhood
"This project will help students see how the math from their classroom and state assessment is used in the real world. This aids in making connections from the classroom to their own lives, therefore, making math more personal. "
— Sharla Lewis,
Coronado Middle School
"Our grant was funding Time for Kids for 4th and 5th grades and Scholastic News for 3rd graders. We wanted these magazines to provide good expository text, current news articles and a venue for discussion with parents about reading and current events. The magazines are well written, have great illustrations and wonderful graphs! Students have been so excited and parents are enjoying the reading/discussion experiences. This grant money is a great help to our students by providing these magazines. We are having wonderful reading and discussions over social studies and science!"
